The
Leader

Moon
Tranquility was prevailing everywhere in the moon lit night.
Stars shone brightly strewn across the sky like a lovely flower garland. Asha
was gazing intently at the blue ball like planet called Earth.
How adorable looking was Earth from this far? It was the
first planet to be inhabited by human beings, the first one to reach the
pinnacle of civilization. She pitied the present condition of Earth. Who were
responsible for pushing Earth to such a vulnerable state? Do the people who
abandoned it to dwell on Moon have a hand in this? What will my grandfather who
refused to leave Earth think about me and my father? Would he label us as selfish
people who forgot about their homeland and fled away? Her mind was coming up
with million such questions.
"Are you thinking about your grandfather again?"
Asha's father Vishal was standing behind her interrupting her
train of thoughts.
"You should not have allowed grandpa to stay in Earth while
you returned back dad." Asha said in a sad tone.
"I did everything I could to bring him here to Moon with
me. But, you do know about his stubbornness." Vishal shrugged.
"You should not have forsaken Earth and come here in the
first instance. Even now I am unable to digest your selfishness." Asha
expressed her agony.
"Asha, you are now 20 years old. You must have heard
about what happened on Earth 25 years ago. Never mind, hear it from me again.
What started as a nuclear war between two small countries of Iran and Israel,
spread among other nations of America, Europe, China and Russia. As a result,
all these nations were destroyed. Even after the war ended, the resulting nuclear
radiation exposure made those places inhabitable. India was the only country to
escape destruction as it remained neutral during war. But, due to global
warming it became victim to consequent natural calamities. So, people living in
India fled to the Moon, Mars or other such planets. There remained few people like
your grandfather who refused to vacate Earth."
"Why did we not take any steps to help our mother planet
Earth?" Asha questioned him.
"We people living in Moon made significant technological
advancements. But, some minerals we require can only be found on Earth. Earth
has become unfit for agriculture now. So, we help them by providing food. In
return for that, we are getting those minerals which we require. Those people working
in the mines on Earth are in a pathetic situation. In short, Earth has become
our planet Moon's slave colony."
"Like how a few centuries ago India suffered as a
British colony." Asha made a valid point.
"Yes. Exactly. I and few others are striving for the
re-structuring and complete development of Earth. I even founded a party to do
this. If I win the presidential election being held next month, then I will
take steps to completely reverse the situation in Earth. Come on, it's late.
Your mother will be looking for you. Let's go to sleep."
Asha tried to get some sleep in her bedroom. She went to
close the windows in her room to ward off the cool winds when she laid eyes on Earth
again.
"I have to go. I have to visit Earth. Somehow, I have to
go to Earth soon."
She fell asleep thinking repeatedly about this in her mind.
----------*********------------
Five years had passed since Vikram Pande became president of Moon.
The growth in business, science and economy during the past five years was
enormous. He took pride in being instrumental to this humongous growth. He
attributed this solely to the availability of minerals from Earth at throw away
prices.
Elections were just round the corner, in another two weeks. He
flipped to the evening news channel on TV anxious of knowing his probability of
winning this election. He got furious when the channel projected that Vishal
Kumar was ahead of him by 10%. The same channel had said that Vikram's
prospects of winning the election were bright based on a survey the previous
week. But things have turned topsy-turvy since then.
Vishal's emotional speech on the pitiable condition of people
residing in Earth had a huge impact on his citizens. Vishal considered the people
living in Earth to be his own kind and that they are entitled to a good life
similar to citizens of Moon. What kind of utter foolishness is this? People
living in Earth are stupid. Adamant fools who want to live in Earth even if
that means dying there. Idiots who refuse to adapt to changing situations. Yet,
they are supported by people like Vishal. Vikram started brain storming various
ideas to tackle Vishal in this election.
----------------****************--------------------
The next day Asha was reading a book in her university
library. News was flashing in the monitor.
"Poll survey of presidential elections going to be held
next month reveals that Vishal Kumar is ahead in the race by 20%."
As she was listening intently to the news, her friend Prem
gestured to meet him outside the library to talk with her privately.
Asha followed him out of the library.
"You had asked me to book a seat for you in the
spaceship that goes to Earth secretly, right? I worked hard to reserve you a
seat in the space shuttle leaving to Earth tomorrow. Is it fine with you to
travel tomorrow?" Prem asked her in hushed tone.
Asha went through all possible options and answered.
"No, Prem. I don’t think I have to leave to Earth immediately. My dad will
surely win the elections next month. If he becomes president, he will be
relaxing all existing restrictions on travelling to Earth."
"Think again and decide. You know how much I struggled
to save you a seat."
"No. I have made up my mind. If I go to Earth secretly
at the moment and that news is leaked, chances of my dad becoming president may
become difficult. That is not good for the future of Earth too."
"You have time till tomorrow to decide. Think well and
tell me."
As Prem left, Asha walked to her home slowly.
The front door was left open. Stepping inside her home made
her realize that something was wrong. She froze in shock going inside her dad's
room. Vishal was drenched in blood. Frantically she ran to the bedroom, to see
her mom dead too.
Asha felt thunderstruck. She cried for a long time closing
her eyes.
Later she recomposed herself and made a call.
"Prem, I need your help."
-----------------***********----------------
One week had passed since Asha landed on Earth. Poverty and
famine in Earth was more overwhelming than she had imagined. Where ever she
turned she faced slum areas with huts, skinny children and youth fighting each
other for food. Every day, meals were given twice in the ration shops. That too
a meager meal of two chapathi, dal and some rice. Asha was overcome with grief
when she saw people fighting with each other for such a small meal.
All men and women living on Earth were working in the mines.
As they were working in harsh environments, they were infested with various
diseases like tuberculosis. There were very few persons from Moon who stayed on
Earth to manage these mine workers. They led an extravagant life in posh
palaces far away from the slums.
As Asha had lot of money with her, she could afford a good
house. Her routine was to go to the slums every morning and show her
grandfather's photo and enquire about him. Unfortunately, she returned
disappointed every day as no one knew anything about him.
One day, after a long day of roaming around, she returned
home to find her suitcase broken. She was perplexed to see that none of her
money, dress, food or other things was stolen. The only thing missing were her
books.
She enquired what had happened to her servant Basheer.
"Nobody reads books any longer. When we don’t even have
one meal per day, how can we read books? But, I know three guys in the slum who
read books. There is a library for those who came from Moon. These three men
went to prison for stealing books from that library. You can ask those fellows
tomorrow." Basheer said.
Asha went to the slum next day. When she reached the hut of
those men she peeped inside.
There she saw three young men reading books intently without
noticing her presence.
As Asha stepped inside their hut, they stood up with
confusion.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"Are you the famous book thieves?"
"Who are you to question us what we do?"
"I am the owner of the books that you are currently reading."
They couldn’t reply as they stood shocked.
One of the guys regained his composure and replied "You
may be the owner of the books but the ideologies in the book belong to people
of this planet. So, do not accuse us as thieves."
"As a matter of fact, since these books are written by
my grandfather, the opinions belong to me too." Asha replied.
They were stunned to hear her reply. "What? Is the legendary
writer Raj Kumar your grandfather?"
"Yes."
"We heard that your dad left to Moon along with all your
family members."
Asha narrated her story and explained how she landed on Earth
in search of her grandfather.
"Do you know where your grandfather is?"
"No. Despite searching him and enquiring about him for
the past one week, I have no luck."
"He has been kept imprisoned in Andaman jail for
starting a revolution against Moon's oppressive rule on Earth."
"How did you come to know about this when nobody else is
aware of it?"
"We know up to date facts about Raj Kumar. We would also
like to help you in your search."
"Chandran."
"Mohan."
"Nero."
All of them stretched their hands towards Asha.
Now there were four united hands on a mission to find Raj
Kumar.
---(2)---
A small boat was seen moving in the sea. The book thieves
along with Asha were in the small boat. Another youth named Vallabh was
steering the boat.
Asha spoke "Sailing in this boat is tedious. Are there
any ships by which we can go to Andaman?"
Chandran replied "Have you still not registered the fact
that Earth has now returned to stone age. Nobody would have seen what a ship
looks like. But the people from Moon are allowed to use aero planes."
Asha asked "So, how long will it take to reach Andaman
by this boat?"
Vallabh replied "Th... Th... Three. Fo... Fo..."
Asha shrieked "You mean three days?"
Vallabh gestured yes.
Nero said "Hey, you stammering fellow! Shut your mouth
and concentrate on sailing."
Asha scolded him. "Why do you criticize him? Do you
think it is possible to go to Andaman if not for his help?"
Nero said "That's right. But if he starts talking, he is
wasting our precious time."
Mohan added "Do not mock other person's weakness. This
has become a bad habit of yours, Nero."
Nero sat mum on hearing what Mohan said.
All three of them took a book and started reading it
silently. Mohan had 'My experiments with truth', Nero took 'Discovery of India'
and Chandran had 'Bose - the springing tiger'.
Asha gave a book to Vallabh too and asked whether he would
like to read.
Vallabh replied "Is it possible to live everyday life
just by reading these books? Only fools function this way."
Asha was surprised."How come now you are able to speak
fluently without stammering?"
Vallabh replied "I stammer occasionally, not all the
time."
Nero chided "Which idiot said that only fools will read
books? Then is Einstein a fool? Steve Hawking a fool? Newton a fool?"
Vallabh replied casually. "You can give a chance to
Einstein, Steve and Newton to steer this boat. Will they be able to do it? Why accuse
them? I would like you to give it a try."
Nero replied angrily. "I wish you were completely
dumb."
Mohan pitched in. "Nero, stop this. Why are you always
getting into a fight with Vallabh?"
Nero stopped and returned to reading his book.
As the boat was cruising silently, Asha was feeling odd about
the fact that she was the only woman among four men. She was also curious to
know what they felt about her.
Mohan and Chandran were so engrossed in their respective
books and didn’t give her a damn.
Only Nero was looking at her from time to time, smiling at
her. His face and smile had some attractive charm. One that could captivate any
woman's heart. No. She had to remain focused and not fall for him. She told
this repeatedly in her mind.
"If you are feeling tired, why don’t you take a
nap?"
Vallabh suggested. Asha could sense his friendly concern for
her.
Suddenly, the wind started blowing with full force.
Vallabh decided "There is going to be a storm tonight.
Hence, it is dangerous for us to continue our journey. We have to reach shore
and spend the night there."
They landed on a small island nearby. They decided to
construct a small hut so they can brave the bad weather.
Nero was disinterested in building the hut.
"I don’t think cutting a tree is my cup of tea. I wonder
how easily you people are able to do it?" he remarked.
Vallabh mocked him. "Einstein would have written a book
on how to cut a tree. Go find it and learn from it."
Nero left the place without another word.
The hut was done by evening. The sun had set in the horizon
and slowly Moon was making its way to the sky. As Vallabh predicted, the wind
was howling with great force.
Asha sat on the shore looking at the moon.
"I don’t mean to interrupt your privacy but I would like
to sit with you." Vallabh came to Asha and said.
Asha looked at him and smiled. He sat next to her.
"You seemed lost looking into the sky. Are you a nature
fanatic?"
"I really love gazing at the sky sitting alone. When I
was on Moon, I used to watch Earth without batting my eyelids. Memories of my
grandfather will engulf me. I longed to see him at least once in my lifetime.
But now everything is reversed, I am on Earth and looking at the moon. Memories
of my dead parents haunt me."
Asha couldn’t speak any longer. Her eyes turned moist with
tears.
Vallabh moved near her and hugged her shoulders. His friendly
hug did console her a bit.
"Don’t worry, we will find your grandfather soon."
As the wind had now picked up speed, they went towards their
hut.
Nero was reading a book in front of the hut. His eyes shone
in jealousy when he saw Asha coming with Vallabh to the hut.
Rain followed, they all went inside the hut and slept.
Asha did not find it difficult to share a room with four
other men. It may be because she felt reassured that these four people were
genuinely concerned about her welfare.
After a long, strenuous day everybody fell asleep soon.
Suddenly, in the middle of the night, Asha woke up, hearing some noise.
Nero was mumbling something shivering in cold. Asha went near
him to find him having fever. She tucked him in her blanket and rubbed his
forehead for a while. When she thought Nero was sleeping again, she tried to
move away from him.
Instead Nero caught her hand.
"I love you Asha." Nero said.
Asha did not expect this. She yanked her hand free and
returned to her place. But, she lost that night's sleep.
The storm did not settle for the next three days. After that,
they were able to continue their journey.
The next day they reached Andaman.
Asha wondered "How do we find the prison?"
Chandran suggested "Can we ask somebody here?"
Vallabh took out a map chalked the route to reach the prison.
Mohan was impressed. "That was good thinking, Vallabh.
Bringing the map with you."
Vallabh said "Come, follow me."
They all followed Vallabh.
In a short time, they came to the prison.
Chandran asked "Now, how do we free Raj Kumar?"
Asha asked "This place is tightly secured, right?"
Chandran said "Yes. We do not have many weapons with us.
I have a revolver. And pretty much that's it. What can we do with it?"
Nero came up with an idea. "Asha, you have lots of
money. Why don’t we bribe them?"
Mohan said "Bribing is wrong, Nero."
Vallabh said "All methods are useless. There is not even
a single person guarding this place. Instead, this prison is fenced by laser
waves. Nobody can get inside or outside the prison."
Nero questioned him "How do you know all these
things?"
Vallabh replied "I am aware of all essential matters
that we need to know. Do you think your books will come to your rescue?"
Asha was disappointed. "Then how can we free my
grandfather?"
Vallabh replied "These rays are being operated by a
computer. If only I had a computer with me right now, I will hack into their
system and will deactivate the rays."
Asha handed him her laptop from Moon. Vallabh eagerly took it
in and booted it up.
Vallabh was excited. "I can now hack into the prison
system within a minute."
Chandran looked confused. "How do you know to use a
computer? We people on Earth have not even looked at one?"
Vallabh beamed as he said "If you are a book thief, I am
a computer thief. I used to steal computers from Moon citizens. But I have
never been caught like you guys. I have a knack of stealing without getting
caught."
Asha cut him short. "There is no time to waste now. Do
your hacking quickly."
Vallabh pressed a few keys and signaled thumbs up once the
prison security system was compromised.
The five of them moved towards the prison.
They were shocked to see the pathetic condition of prisoners
once they were inside. Most of them were fainting in hunger. Few were mentally
disturbed.
Vallabh said "Most of the prisoners get only one meal
per three days. Sometimes, they are kept locked in dark cells too."
Chandran asked "Now, how do we find your grandfather?
Have you seen him earlier, Asha?"
Asha replied "No. But I have a picture of him taken 30
years ago."
They split up and searched each and every room. They found an
aged man lying half-fainted in one of the cells.
On seeing him, Asha shouted in happiness. "This is my
grandfather!"
Chandran said "Look at him one more time and confirm.
You say you have not met him before."
But Asha was adamant. "There is no room for doubt. My intuition
says he is my grandfather."
Chandran said "May be you feel him to be your blood relation."
Vallabh pointed out. "The prison authorities would have
come to know by now that the prison has been compromised. So it is wise that we
leave immediately. Come on, hurry up, we have to leave with him at once."
Lifting Raj Kumar with them, they ran towards the shore where
their boat was ready. They reached the shore in a short while.
Nero suggested "First we have to bring him back to
consciousness. Let's feed him water that we have."
Vallabh added "You can try giving him cheese."
In a few seconds, Raj's lips quivered. His eyelids fluttered
open and then closed.
Nero saw this and said "I think he will be alright if we
continually feed him food and water. But first let's get out of this
island."
Vallabh asked "Where do we go from here?"
Chandran thought aloud. "It is too dangerous for us to
return back home. We cannot keep Raj in hiding there."
Vallabh suggested "Then can we hide in Andaman
itself?"
Asha said "That’s not possible. In a few hours, security
robots will be scanning this place thoroughly."
Nero gave an idea. "Let's go to Sri Lanka. Oppression by
Moon citizens is lax there. Upon reaching Lanka, we can decide on our next course
of action."
Asha seconded his thoughts. "Yes. That seems to be a
good idea."
Chandran asked. "Now that your grandfather has been
rescued, do you plan to take him to Moon with you?"
Asha said. "No. I have not given it a thought. Most
probably he won't agree to come to Moon with me."
Nero said "There is no use in talking further and wasting
time here. We will think about what to do next, later when we are in a safe
place. Everybody get on the boat. Vallabh, steer away the boat as fast as you
can."
All of them got on the boat. The sky was getting dark. Moon
was creeping into the sky slowly. The boat rocked gently as it made it's way
into the ocean and disappeared in the horizon.
---(3)---
Asha has been staying in Sri Lanka for the past one week with
her friends. Her grandfather's health was rapidly improving.
She was in for a surprise that day when she went to her
grandpa's room to give him food. Her grandpa who usually was found lying in bed
was not there. He was standing in the patio near the room overlooking the sea.
He saw Asha coming to him and asked her.
"Are you the one who brought me here? Who are you? What
is this place?"
"Yes. I along with my friends freed you from Andaman
prison. You can consider me as your granddaughter." Asha told him.
"That's right. If I had a granddaughter, then she would
be of your age only. Why did you free me from the prison?"
"Should there be any special reason for a granddaughter
to free her grandpa?"
"What do you mean?"
Asha showed the picture in her hand to him.
"Do you recognize who this is?"
"This was taken 30 years ago with my son."
"Now, take a look at this photo."
"This is a photo of my son. The baby in his hand?"
Asha pointed a finger towards her.
"No, that’s not possible. My son! He left me and went.
He abandoned me. I don’t want anybody contacting me as his family. Leave me
alone to be at peace. Go away."
"Please listen to me."
"No. Even though you are my granddaughter, I do not wish
to see your face. Your dad had betrayed me and his home land. Then what will
you, his prodigy, turn out to be? Return back to your homeland Moon. Live there
luxuriously as you wish."
"Dad had not done anything wrong. You seem to think only
about you; only about your past life on Earth. But dad thought about the future
of Earth and acted accordingly. He had a vision for the next generation and the
human population in general. Hence, he made a wise decision."
"This is exactly what your dad told me. You cannot
pacify me by telling this nonsense."
"Fine. Did you achieve in bringing about a change, by
staying on Earth stubbornly? Dad knew it was of no use to stay on Earth, in
order to improve it's condition. So, he left to Moon. He had plans to create
heaven on Earth. And he would have succeeded in that too, provided fate had not
intervened."
Raj Kumar questioned Asha with his looks.
"Dad fought for the re-construction of Earth. So, he was
killed at the hands of enemies."
Raj Kumar was thunderstruck on hearing his son's demise. He
collapsed into tears covering his face with his hands.
He hugged Asha and stood for a long time.
At that time, the book thieves and Vallabh came into the
room. On seeing the grim situation, they prepared to leave the room. But, Asha
signaled them to stay.
"I could not have saved you grandpa if not for the help
of these four men." Asha said.
She introduced them to her grandpa.
Chandran was the first to speak. "We need no
introduction to you, Sir. We have read each and every line of your book on
Indian freedom struggle."
Raj said. "I am surprised that at this young age you are
reading books."
Vallabh added "Don’t include me in their book reading camp.
I feel drowsy the very next moment I read a book."
Asha rebuked. "Vallabh, do not speak ill of yourself. He
is an expert in computers. We were able to free you from Andaman prison only
because of his heroic act."
Raj said, "I envy you guys. What has the situation of
people on Earth turned out to be? They have become like cattle cows. If you
provide them food, they work like slaves. The spark, the passion inside them to
live has been completely extinguished. That is why we are not able to shake off
Moon's oppressive rule. But, you guys have a hunger that stretches beyond your
stomach. For one of you, it is the hunger of knowing technology, for the rest
of you, a craving to know the world through books. Now, I have some hope about
the future of Earth on seeing you dedicated young guys."
Nero said "You are praising us more than what is necessary."
Raj said "Showering you with praise is not my intention.
I have other plans for you."
Nero asked "What is it?"
Raj replied "Why can't Earth fight against Moon's rule?"
Nero asked "What do we fight with? We look like a tiny
ant when compared to the man power, weapons and intellectual power of people on
Moon."
Raj replied "You should not degrade yourself."
Nero said "Then go ahead, explain your plan."
Raj detailed "You four guys have to start an
organization that fights against Moon's rule."
Nero questioned him. "What do you think we four people
alone can achieve?"
Raj went on. "This organization which you four people
start should bring each and every person on Earth together. You should kindle
the freedom fire inside each one's heart."
Nero had doubts. "Will it be possible to make this dream
come true?"
Mohan said "Yes, it is possible. You have to believe in
yourself. The path to success will then unfold by itself."
Raj said "Your organization must have a leader. Who
wants to be the leader?"
Mohan suggested "Let Asha become our leader."
Raj said "Even though Asha is concerned about Earth's
welfare, she cannot become your leader because she is from Moon. If she is a
member of your organization, people may not completely trust you. In fact her
role in this should be relegated to providing advice alone. Only you people,
who are the true sons of Earth have to run it from the fore front."
All four men were hesitant and remained silent.
Mohan said "This leader post comes with herculean
responsibility. It would be better if you can name a leader yourself."
Raj thought for a second. "Fine. I should get to know
you people well enough before I can decide upon the leader. Hence, I would like
to interact with each one of you on a one-to-one basis."
Chandran said "We agree to this."
Raj said "Mohan, you are first. Come to that room with
Asha."
All three went inside the adjacent room and sat.
Raj started talking. "You must have studied history.
History shows that each country has got it's own way of obtaining freedom. What
would you choose as the best method to get freedom?"
Mohan was quick to answer. "Non-violence movement. That
is the best way."
Raj prodded further. "Is there no scope for violence
then?"
Mohan stood firm. "There is absolutely no room for
violence."
Raj went on. "Even if the enemy crushes your people with
violence?"
Mohan said "Till our last breath we will fight without
violence."
Raj asked "Can you elaborate more on your non-violence
movement?"
Mohan said "First we will stage talks with the enemy
camp. If that doesn’t turn out successful then we will indulge in
non-cooperation."
Raj replied "OK. You can leave now. Send Nero in."
When Nero came inside, he was asked the same question.
Nero replied "My strategy would be holding talks with
our foe. I am not interested in using violence."
Raj asked "Is it possible to convince your enemy to free
you, only by holding talks?"
Nero replied "Yes. That is quite possible. All human
beings are by nature, born good. When we speak the right words, in a correct
manner at the appropriate time, our efforts won't go waste. I believe I have
the ability to convince them."
Raj asked Nero to leave and called Chandran inside.
Chandran detailed his action plan when asked the same
question.
"Revolution. Revolution with weapons. That is the only
way out. We have to beat their force with ours."
Raj asked "Once Earth is free, what kind of government
is good for Earth?"
Chandran said "I don’t believe in democracy any longer.
There must a leader who is sincerely passionate about his citizens and at the
same time who can rule with an iron fist."
Raj said "Your interaction is over. Send Vallabh
next."
Vallabh answered the same question. "I would not
restrict myself to one particular kind of revolution. First I would start peace
talks. Then, I would threaten them. If that is not successful, then
non-violence movement. If none of this works out, then we have to take weapons
in our hands. But mind you, I will choose a method where there is not an
enormous loss of lives and at the same time one which creates a profound
impact. I will choo.. choo.. choos.."
Raj said surprised.
"I don’t know you had stammering problem."
Vallabh replied "I stammer when I get emotional."
Raj said "OK. You can leave now."
As soon as Vallabh left, Asha turned to her granddad and
asked anxiously "So, who did you choose as the leader grandpa?"
Raj said "Nero builds castles in air, thinking it is
possible to convince the enemy by just holding peace talks. This is not a practical
method at all. Chandran exhibits revolutionary characteristics. But, he chooses
violence as his path. This prevents him from becoming the leader. Mohan can
become a great leader. His non-violence movement has turned out to be successful
in the past. And has met with failures too in a few places. I think Vallabh's
method is the best. He comes across as a resourceful person. I would have
gladly christened him as the leader if not for his stammering problem. A leader
must have good oratory skills. Hence, this makes him unfit to be the
leader."
Asha was confused. "Grandpa, do not mince words. Who do
you have in mind as the leader?"
Raj said "Mohan is the leader. Come, let's inform the
rest."
All four men standing outside were eagerly awaiting the
announcement.
Raj spoke. "Your leader will be Mohan. Even though he is
your leader, all of you must act only after discussing and reaching a unanimous
decision. I also hereby appoint Vallabh as deputy leader, Nero as party
propaganda promoter and finally Chandran can assist each of you in whatever
capacity he can."
Vallabh and Nero congratulated Mohan by shaking hands with
him. But Chandran was infuriated by Raj's decision. The next day he went
missing.
---(4)---
The whole day was
spent searching Chandran in every nook and corner of the island. But he was not
found.
Mohan spoke "I know Chandran for the past ten years. I
am grieved at the thought of losing him."
Asha asked "What may be the reason for him to go his own
way?"
Vallabh pitched in. "May be he got angry when he was not
selected as leader?"
Mohan said "No. Chandran is not power crazy. My
ideologies are different from his. May be he thought that he couldn’t function
whole heartedly under my leadership and went away."
Raj interrupted. "It's time for all three of you to go
to India. You have to reignite the passion for freedom among all people. My
best wishes for you to become successful in your endeavors."
Nero asked "Then, are you two not coming with us?"
Asha said "No. Grandfather is unfit to travel. He has
not recouped completely. I must stay with him to take care of him."
All three men bid goodbye and boarded the boat.
Asha and her grandpa stood on the shore watching the boat
till it vanished in the horizon.
--------------*************--------------------
There was an uncomfortable silence in the boat. Nero's eyes
showed the pain of leaving Asha behind.
Mohan broke the silence. "The task that we are on, looks
tedious. I don’t know where to start. Nor am I sure of how it will end."
Nero said "We have to speak to the people. We have to
touch their soul by interacting with them."
Vallabh replied "I am of the opinion that speech alone
is not sufficient. Our people are living like zombies. When they remain content
with just one meal per day, what can we do to wake them to life, to trigger
freedom struggle amongst them?"
But Mohan brushed his opinions aside."What Nero pointed
out is true. If you look at history, great leaders were able to captivate
people only by their powerful speeches. Nero, you are an expert in oratory
skills. Hence, I am more dependent on you."
Vallabh remarked "As though he is going to achieve
everything with his dumb speech!"
Mohan cut him short. "If we all want our mission to be
successful, you two guys should not fight with each other. It's not wrong that
both of you have your own point of view. When people with different ideologies
combine efforts in a mission, it will turn out to be hugely successful. But
this difference of opinion should not create a rift between you two."
Nero and Vallabh remained silent.
Mohan continued "Both of you have to promise me that you
won't abandon each other till this mission is accomplished Each of you should
be a pillar of support to the other. You have to keep up this promise."
Mohan stretched his hand towards them. They placed their
hands on his.
Next day, they reached their city.
-----------------*************-------------------
One month had passed since they were back in India. The three
men by now had reached the brink of frustration. They were hugely unsuccessful
in all their attempts to motivate their people to participate in freedom
struggle. Their emotional speech, gathering all slum people too did not bear
any fruits. People did not give a damn about freedom. The three men were now
huddled in their hut lost in deep discussion.
Mohan wondered "Why did we ever take up this uphill task
when we could have remained happy with three meals a day and lots of books to
read? I am thinking of bringing our efforts to kindle freedom struggle among
people to an end? But, I hesitate to do so at the thought of letting down
Asha's grandfather."
Vallabh said "We should not abandon our efforts at any
cost. Talking to each person individually has not been effective so far. Today
we are going directly to the mines, assemble everybody working there and
address them collectively."
So they made their way to the mine's cafeteria and spoke
about their mission. One of the workers threw his slipper at Mohan. Another man
threw his plate at Nero.
The three men left the place crestfallen. On the way back,
they saw a woman wailing with her six year old kid on lap. That small boy had
also worked in the mines. He was now dead unable to bear the harsh working
conditions. Nobody seemed to care about the mother and her dead son.
Suddenly Nero did something totally unexpected.
He took the dead boy in his hands and rushed to the mine's
cafeteria.
"Is he old enough to work in this mine? He should have
been playing in the grounds. Or pursue his education in school. Do any of our
children get proper education or are they allowed to play? Who is responsible
for this young boy's death? Moon citizens? No. We are to be held responsible.
We are the ones who do not care of our pathetic situation. We are disinterested
about the future of our children. We all have a role to play in killing this
young boy." He addressed the workers earnestly.
The mother of the boy came to Nero and wailed loudly
"Yes. I killed my own son. I am responsible for his death."
People who were listening to this joined her. "What he
says is true. What Nero says is true." Their voice rose.
Nero took advantage of the gaining momentum and continued his
speech.
"Our home land Earth is very sacred. This was the first
planet in the universe where life existed. It was the planet that hosted the
intelligent human race. Our ancestors who lived in Earth were highly civilized
and scientifically advanced. When such a planet was under trouble, few of our
people from last generation abandoned us. Nevertheless, there were also few other
people who loved their homeland and refused to budge from it, even if it cost them
their lives. Is it wise that we, the descendants of such patriotic people on
Earth, choose to spend the rest of our lives working as slaves to those
traitors who left us? Should we not rise
against those Moon citizens who treat us like bonded laborers providing us just
one meal per day? Are we not entitled to freedom?" Nero's speech was hit
people like blazing fire.
On hearing Nero's speech, everybody shouted with enthusiasm.
"We want freedom! We want freedom!"
Next Mohan continued speaking to the crowd.
"We are going to fight against the oppressive rule of Moon
citizens. But, we are going to wage a non-violent battle. There is no room for
violence of any kind. Our enemies will send robotic soldiers to attack us. They
will take our lives. Even if that results in bloodshed, we should retaliate
only through non-violence. Our enemy may be more powerful than us. But, we are
the ones entitled to justice. This will make our enemies bow before us some day
in the near future."
Everyone in the crowd roared happily.
Mohan asked Vallabh to talk to the crowd.
"We will follow our leader Mohan. Long live Mohan!"
He ended his speech short.
The crowd went on a procession shouting the slogans.
"Long live Mohan! Long live Vallabh! Long live Nero! Mohan, our great
leader!"
The three men took the dead body of the boy to bury him in
the slum. All the mine workers followed them, chanting "We want freedom!
We want freedom!" The usually bustling mines were completely devoid of any
people at the moment.
--------------**********-------------
The governor of Earth, Mukesh was the right hand of the
president of the moon. Their friendship goes back to the days when they were both
living in Earth. They graduated from the same college and joined the military
together. They even worked in the same army division. After they came to Moon,
it was Mukesh who suggested the idea of starting their own party. The rest was
history. The fate of Moon as well as Earth took a turn. Burgeoning leaders and citizens
of Moon had a sympathetic feeling towards Earth. But it was solely the work of
Mukesh and Vikram in bringing about a diverse change in their attitude. Vikram
strongly believed in the fact that if citizens of Moon were to live happily
then the helplessness of people on Earth has to be exploited. The ideas of
Vikram took shape when Mukesh implemented it successfully. He prided himself
that his steely resolution was responsible for turning Earth citizens into his
slaves. But for the first time, he was
being challenged by three men.
"From where did these three men appear? For the past ten
years there was no one brave enough to question us. How did these men turn
courageous enough to fight us?"
Sensing that the Moon president appointed governor of Earth,
Mukesh Varma was in a rage, his cabinet ministers assembled in the meeting chose
to be silent.
"Why are you all keeping mum? Do you have any
information on these three guys?" Mukesh shouted.
"They are from TamilNadu. They are illiterate fellows
involving in petty thefts. I don’t know how they suddenly turned brave enough
to plan such a revolution and execute it?"
"Earlier the people of TamilNadu alone supported them.
But now it has spread to the whole of India. The one crore population of India are
now going frenzy over them. I am clueless as to how they were able to achieve
this in a mere two months?"
"I had earlier suggested squashing these men like bugs
with our robot soldiers. But you asked me to be patient in handling this. Now
see how gigantic the problem has grown into." said one of the ministers.
"No. We cannot approach this issue with weapons force as
they are not using any kind of violence in their revolution. They are a firm
believer of non-violence movement. In that case, if we use army on them, then
all the people will be instigated to rise against us. Even, if we do manage to
kill these three guys, the remaining people will mushroom into new leaders. We
have to fight fire with fire only. Arrange a meeting with these guys. Inform
them that I would like to personally talk with them here in Delhi
tomorrow." Mukesh dispersed the meeting.
-----------------*******--------------
Governor Mukesh was
judging each of the three men seated in front of him.
As they remained silent, he decided to break the ice.
"Was your flight to Delhi comfortable?"
Nero replied "It was comfortable. Thank you."
Governor said "Only the Moon citizens have the privilege
of flying in planes. For the first time, I have given that unique opportunity
to you. You are indeed truly special."
Mohan cut him short. "I prefer we come straight to the
matter."
Governor said "Yes. Yes. We will be talking soon. Be
patient, young man. You want everything to happen quickly. At such a young age,
you want to be a leader, hold a powerful position, is it? I enquired about your
background. It seems you three were book thieves."
Nero said "It's of no use to talk about the past. Let's
concentrate on the future."
Governor said "Don’t get angry, young man. In fact, we, Moon
citizens can also be labeled as thieves. Thieves functioning on a much larger
scale than you. We are robbing Earth's wealth and sending it to Moon. So this
is just a discussion held between two groups of thieves. So, I can take forward this discussion to how we are
going to split our loot?"
Vallabh replied "You are a fool! You cannot even judge a
person in front of you, you are not worthy of power at all. We are not here to
gain anything on a personal front. What we require is the freedom of all people
on Earth. We want our mines and all other resources back. All Moon inhabitants
must flee Earth immediately."
Governor remarked "Lofty objectives! All three of you have
lofty intentions. But, this will not see the light of the day in the current
situation. So, better listen to what I offer. I am giving each of you a place
in my cabinet. Palace like houses, robot servants to serve you, lots of money
and luxurious life. All these exclusively for you, provided you stop
propagating ideas of freedom, rights and other nonsense among your
people."
Mohan replied "Governor, we came here with an open mind
that you still have a little conscience left. But, you are a true business man.
No, like you said, a thief. That too a huge thief. I believe there is no use
talking any further. We prefer to leave."
Governor threatened them as a last resort. "You do not
know what I am capable of doing. I can give orders to kill all your
people."
Mohan replied coolly. "Let's see what you can do.
Goodbye."
Once they left, the governor threw the objects on his desk angrily
on the floor. Everything was smashed to pieces.
--------------***********---------------
The three men were now in their hut chalking out their
subsequent action plans.
Nero said "I never expected the governor to talk like
this. I had huge hopes on him that he would help us get at least some of our
basic rights back."
Vallabh added "We cannot restrain the agitations of our
people any longer. If we continue to do so, then they may start a revolt
anytime."
Mohan said "It is our duty to make sure that our people
never resort to violence at all costs, however bad the situation becomes."
Vallabh was not convinced. "You cannot be so rigid,
Mohan. You have to sometimes bend to achieve your goal."
But Mohan disagreed. "Our next step will be non
co-operation. Our people should stop working in the mines."
Vallabh refused the idea as a bad one. "This is not
going to work. The governor will then stop providing food in the shops."
Mohan said "Yes, I know that will happen. Our people will
have to sacrifice food for freedom. We will continue to remain in hunger till
we get freedom."
Nero agreed. "This is a good idea. If people don’t work
in mines then the Moon citizens cannot survive after a while."
Mohan said "Yes, Nero! You are the one well-versed in
delivering a speech. And your speeches are also being lapped up by people. You
are being celebrated as a hero wherever you go. So, you are the right person to
travel to all parts of India and garner the support of everyone by your speech.
Vallabh, you are a great administrator. You have to come with new ideas to
achieve our target. Now, it's time for us to sleep."
Nero excitedly went to his hut. Vallabh was not fully
convinced with the plan. That explained the dissatisfied look on his face.
---------------**********-----------------
Mohan, Vallabh and Nero were lying down inside their hut.
Outside their hut, people sat silently. Two weeks had passed since everyone in
the country(Earth) had gone on a hunger strike.
Functioning of the mines came to a standstill. This impacted
the Moon by creating a serious shortage of electricity and other essential
goods.
Governor Mukesh answered the call made by the president of
the moon, Vikram on hotline.
"What is happening there, Mukesh? We are facing acute
shortage of electricity for two weeks. No goods are available. You are to be
blamed for this situation. You are incapable of handling administration on Earth.
What is hindering your rule?" Vikram was irritated.
"People are refusing to work in the mines. In fact, I
have stopped providing them food. But still, they keep fasting. As a last
resort, we even killed people in two slums in Mumbai. Nearly 5000 people died.
Yet, they refuse to budge even a little." Mukesh explained in detail.
"How did people turn so hostile?"
"Because of three men. They are the reason for
instigating people against us."
"You should have killed them and dumped them in the
slum."
"I thought about it too. But the only reason the people
have not taken to violence is because their leader Mohan has strictly
instructed them not to. If we kill them, then the one crore people on Earth
will pounce on us. Can our robot soldiers ward off attack from one crore
people?"
"What you say is true. I have a plan. You instruct all robots
on Earth to work in the mines. Let's see how long people can survive without
food. One week? One month? I don’t think they can stretch beyond that. If they
become aware that life long they are not going to get food, they will fear us
and automatically come under our control."
"Great idea. I will do as you say immediately." Mukesh
said and ended the call.
--------------************------------
Robots took the place of people in mines all over Earth.
People were gripped with fright. They sat in front of the Governor's palace assuring
him that they have ended their protest. They also begged to be given their work
at the mines.
But, the governor did not concede to their requests. He
informed the people that he cannot accept their requests, as there was a
possibility that the three men will start the protest again.
The governor won in turning the people's fear into anger
against the three men.
Vallabh and Nero were shocked by the people's drastic change
in behavior. They were confused as to what to do next. But, Mohan did not lose
hope. And he did not stop fasting.
All three engaged in a serious discussion. They reached a
conclusion that Vallabh and Nero would meet the governor in Delhi and talk with
him again. They both left Mohan in the hut and embarked on their journey.
That unfortunate incident happened when Mohan was alone in
his hut.
People mobbed Mohan's hut. Some men entered his hut and beat
the life out of him.
"You dog! It is because of you that our children are dead
due to hunger." People shouted mercilessly and set him on fire.
Till his last breath, Mohan fought for his cause and had to
sacrifice his life too.
---(5)---
Mohan had breathed his last two weeks ago. While Nero and
Vallabh were spending their life hiding from the governor's soldiers.
Nero spoke "I lost my two close friends who I knew for
the past ten years. I feel orphaned."
Vallabh consoled him. "Nero, we took this mission
knowing that we would have to face such tough situations. It is expected of us
to make sacrifices for the sake of freedom."
Nero replied "Mohan was like a brother to me. I had
never once refuted what he said. I am afraid of how my future will turn out to
be without his guidance."
Vallabh replied "Nero, I know you dislike me. We think
on different wavelengths. But, we have to co-operate with each other to achieve
freedom. So, we have to set aside our personal differences and work our way
towards a common goal. That is the best way to show respect to Mohan's
soul."
Nero sighed. "What can we do now? The very same people
who we wanted to be free have turned
hostile."
Vallabh replied "Till now we protested non-violently. It's
time to bring about some changes."
Nero asked "Do you mean to say we have to use weapons?
Mohan would not have agreed to this plan."
Vallabh replied "I don’t mean to say we have to use
force. Instead, we have to use our intelligence. We have to resort to
conspiracy. I assure you that there will not be any more bloodshed."
Nero was still not clear. "What do you have in your
mind?"
Vallabh explained "Our biggest blow right now, are the
robots working in the mines. In fact, these robots outnumber the Moon citizens
living in Earth. These robots are everywhere as their soldiers and military men.
If we eradicate these robots, then the Moon citizens will become handicapped
without them."
Nero asked him "So, we are going to destroy the robots?"
Vallabh detailed his plan. "The software that runs these
robots is in a central server. If I succeed in uploading my virus software
program in that server, then these robots will be disabled. The problem is that
server cannot be easily hacked. Only the governor has the authorization to
access the server. Plus, he has a special laptop designated to access the
server with him. That laptop scans the governor's retina and sends it to the
server. After his retina image has been validated, he is allowed access to the
server. Hence, to hack the server we need the governor's laptop and retinal
image."
Nero became disappointed. "Is this even possible? Can we
do it?"
Vallabh said "The laptop is in the governor's bedroom. A
servant named Albert is assigned the duty of cleaning his room twice daily, in
the morning and evening. Besides, all activities in the room will be monitored
by the governor's assistant on a TV."
Nero said "With such restrictions how can we get the
laptop?"
Vallabh said "I know where Albert lives. Tonight, I am
going to steal from his house, the uniform he wears and his identity card. And
I am going to give him sleeping pills so that he doesn’t wake up for two days.
Then, I am going in his disguise to the governor's room and stealing the
laptop."
Nero asked "But your activities will be monitored in the
TV?"
Vallabh replied "That is where I require your
assistance. You have to act like you want to surrender to the governor and that
you would like to meet him before that. Then you will get inside the governor's
palace. Before they let you in, they will conduct security check on you. They
will take you to the control room for checking. That is where the surveillance video
footage from all the rooms is displayed. From there, they will forward it to
the governor's assistant. You have to do something so that the video footage
from one year ago gets sent to the assistant."
Nero asked "Where do we find the old video
recordings?"
Vallabh showed him. "I have it. Take a look."
Nero was astonished. "How did this come under your
possession?"
Vallabh replied "Do you remember the last time when we
were inside the governor's palace? At that time, I went to another room to
drink water. I noticed an adjacent room containing piles of old surveillance
videos. When the soldiers were not watching me, I took a few of them with me,
thinking maybe they would come in handy some day."
Nero was again puzzled. "Fine. But how do we get the
governor's retina image?"
Vallabh had made plans for that too. "What you see here
is a contact lens. But, this is actually a camera. When you are talking with
the governor you should somehow scan his retina using this. Then, you can wear
this in your eyes and we can operate that laptop without a glitch."
Nero said excitedly. "I am in for it. Let's meet the
governor tomorrow."
--------------***********----------------
The next day Nero went to the governor's palace. He was
stopped for security check. Behind him, Vallabh was standing wearing the
servant's uniform.
In the security control room, Nero was frisked by robots for
possessing any weapon.
They made him remove his shoes.
When he was wearing his shoes back, he acted like falling
down on the floor.
The security robots started gathering around him.
In that split second when all eyes were on Nero, Vallabh
seized the opportunity. He had mentally made a note of the TV that showed surveillance
video from the governor's bedroom. He rapidly inserted a drive in the computer
that was connected to that particular TV.
He did all this before the security robots returned back to
their respective positions.
Nero proceeded to the office chambers of the governor.
Whereas, Vallabh went to the governor's bedroom.
The governor asked Nero to sit.
"You have come here alone? Where is your friend?"
The governor asked.
"We need some assurance from you. If you can guarantee
that no harm will be done to our lives, then we can surrender positively by tomorrow."
Nero placed his request.
The governor laughed on hearing this. The governor positioned
his face directly in front of Nero's and spoke.
"Man is basically an animal. Mighty objectives may look
like his outer shell. If we see beneath it, he is just another animal who fears
his life. I give my word that I won't kill you both. But you will be imprisoned
for the rest of your lives."
When the governor was talking, Nero closed his eyes and
opened it immediately. That was enough to scan the retina of the governor.
Nero left the governor's palace.
At the same time, the assistant was watching the surveillance
video showing Albert cleaning the governor's bedroom. Suddenly, he noticed that
the clock in his bedroom was showing the date as one year ago.
He wasted no time in going to the governor's bedroom with his
robot soldiers. But there was no one to be found. He informed the governor too.
The governor came to the room and scanned everything. Nothing seemed to be
missing. But, he thought something was fishy. Out of the blue, he opened his
locker. His laptop which was in the locker was not there.
Meanwhile, Vallabh fled the governor's palace as fast as he
could and met Nero. They were very happy that they caught hold of the laptop
and retina image. They booted it up and accessed the server. Vallabh uploaded
his virus software quickly. In a few seconds, all the robots in Earth were
disabled. The security robots, the robots working in the mines and everywhere
else dropped to the floor.
People watched this happening awe struck. Nero and Vallabh
came out of their hiding and addressed the people with joy that the rule of Moon
inhabitants had come to an end. And also that the robots cannot function any
more.
"Kill the governor! Not even one Moon citizen should be left
alive on Earth! Kill them all!" The people were shouting madly.
Nero signaled them to be quiet.
"Even if one drop of blood from a Moon citizen is
spilled, then you cannot see us both alive. We should not harm anybody. We will
set up a court to investigate the governor's crime. Till then, we will imprison
them."
The crowd got pacified by his speech.
All over the globe, people took to the streets, dancing with
joy.
"Freedom! Independence!" was the mantra on every
one's lips.
-----------********-------------
Asha and her grandpa had come to meet Vallabh and Nero from
Lanka. Nero had arranged for a grand feast in his house. Nero got a chance to
talk to Asha in private.
"It has been ages since we last met. Not even a single
day had passed when I didn't think about you. Hereafter, we should not be apart
even for a moment." Nero said lovingly.
"I have decided to go to Moon, Nero." Asha replied.
"Please don’t go. Marry me and stay with me till the
end, Asha." Nero pleaded.
Asha's face showed no signs of hesitation. She was not taken
aback by Nero's reply. She had in fact prepared to expect this sought of
reaction from him.
"No, that's not possible Nero. I don’t have space for a
male companion in my life. I am not interested to get married in the first
place. I want to sacrifice my life for the well being of citizens of Earth and Moon."
"That we can both do it, together."
"Yes. We are going to work on that, together. But not as
a couple, just friends. If we marry each other, then sometimes we tend to be
selfish when it comes to matters pertaining to our family. So, I have ruled out
marriage in my life. I am going to dedicate my entire life to the upliftment of
people."
Nero's eyes reflected
the disappointment in his heart. At that time, Vallabh and Raj Kumar entered
the room. Asha changed the conversation deftly.
Raj said "I did not even think in my wildest dream that
I will one day walk this Earth as a free man. The people in Earth are forever
indebted to you two men."
Nero reminded him. "You forgot the sacrifices made by
Mohan."
Raj continued. "Even if he is no more, he has guided you
both on the righteous path. Now, you have to shoulder the responsibility of
setting up democracy here. As per Mohan's wish, that government will follow the
path of truth and non-violence. None of the Moon citizens should be harmed.
Those Moon citizens who want to go back to Moon can leave Earth. And those who
want to stay back, should be given the same rights as others."
Nero agreed. "That is what I intend to do."
Raj said "You started out as four people. Now, you are
the last two standing. Time has come for you to decide who is going to be the
next leader."
Nero was quick to respond. "Vallabh is entirely
responsible for the freedom of Earth. If not for his intelligent plans, we
would not have obtained freedom. Hence, he will make a good leader."
Vallabh opened his mouth to protest but Raj cut him short.
Raj explained "Our problems have not come to an end with
this. You have to keep in mind that the Moon government will try to attack us
again. The probability of them waging a war is high. So, a man with an iron
fist has to be at the helm of government here. Therefore, you are more suited
for this post. Hence, I christen you as the leader, Vallabh."
Nero asked "Asha, what's your plan?"
Asha replied "I am planning to go back to Moon. Moon is
also under military regime. Besides, I want to find the people responsible for
my parent's death. But grandpa will continue to stay here."
Raj said "Tomorrow, you both have to address the people
of Earth. After which, Nero will make an announcement that Vallabh will be our next
leader."
All of them dispersed. With Asha and Vallabh going out first,
followed by Raj who was trailing after them.
As they walked, Asha slowly held Vallabh's hand in hers.
Vallabh gently kissed her hand.
"Vallabh, when I am with you, my sorrow seems to
disappear. I fell in love with you the very same moment I saw you."
"Marry me, Asha." Vallabh said.
"I cannot do that, Vallabh. Nero is in love with me. If
I choose to marry you, then it may result in a rift between you two. This may
pose a hindrance to our goal. So, hereafter, we will continue to be good
friends. All our thoughts and actions must be directed towards the welfare of
our people."
"I am able to understand your plight, Asha. This freedom
could not have been possible without the contribution of Nero. We are obliged to
respect his feelings."
"I want only one thing from you, Vallabh. Would you kiss
me, one last time?"
Vallabh gently moved her face near his and barely kissed her
lips for a second. At once, he moved away from her releasing her hands.
"Go, Asha. Have a peaceful sleep tonight. Tomorrow is an
important day for all of us. We are going to address our people after being
free for the first time. Prepare yourself for the happiest day of our life.
Don’t let your mind wander over other unnecessary things. You may leave
now."
By that time, Raj had come near them. Asha bid good bye to
Vallabh through her eyes as she couldn’t speak with overwhelming grief.
Vallabh stood there watching her move away till her
silhouette disappeared in the shadows.
-----------*******-------------
People had assembled in large numbers excited to hear what
their new leaders had to say.
Nero began the speech.
"From this day onwards, we are breathing a fresh air of
freedom on Earth. Hereafter, we are not slaves. This is the day when our wishes
are fulfilled. Till now, we dreamt of obtaining freedom. Starting today, we
have to dream about building a secure future for our children. They should have
good education, big industries to work and live in a disease free
society."
The crowd cheered all the way during Nero's speech.
"Leader! Leader! Nero is our next leader!" They
kept shouting his name happily.
Vallabh was shocked to see the crowd's response. He sat there
in his seat collapsed.
Nero started to speak. "People, Please be quiet! Listen
to me! Our next leader is …."
But the crowd that had gathered there, did not allow him to speak.
They kept on chanting the slogan "Nero, our great leader!"
Vallabh regained his composure and went near Nero. He held
his hand and raised it high while shouting "Nero is our leader!"
The entire place was roaring with the euphoria of the crowd.
Meanwhile Vallabh's mind was racing with various thoughts as
he assessed the situation.
"Nero, I promise to be with you like your shadow till my
last breath. I will stand by you in good and bad times. To make Mohan's dream
come true, we will both work together. You are forever my leader."
---------------***************----------------
Chandran was cruising through universe in a small space
shuttle. His face showed determination and eyes lit with resolve.
"You have done it all wrong, Raj Kumar! Revolution!
Weapon's revolution! That should have been the future of Earth. I am going to
sow the seeds of this revolution on Earth. And I am going to launch this from Moon.
Moon! Here I come!"
---(6)--
Moon
Asha was sitting in front of her parent's grave mourning
their death. Prem was standing behind, a little away from her.
"Asha, it is getting late. Come on. Let's move from here
before anybody becomes suspicious of our activities."
"I couldn’t even take part in the last rites of my
parents. You had to do everything."
"So what? Am I not allowed to do that on your behalf,
Asha?"
"Now, where can I stay, Prem?"
"The government is in hot pursuit of you. I have an
underground bunker in my garden. My dad had constructed this to protect himself
as he is antagonistic to the government activities. You can hide there. Nobody
can find you in my bunker. What is your next plan?"
"Can you tell me what happened on Moon while was in Earth?"
"Citing your father's death, Vikram Pande postponed the
election for another two months. After Earth became free, the flow of minerals
to Moon stopped. This impacted the availability of goods on Moon, creating a
shortage. Vikram cunningly used this situation to instigate people's hatred
towards Earth. There is also wide spread notion that very soon they are going
to wage a war against Earth. Day by day, he is gaining support of all moon
citizens. There is no strong competitor to oppose him. We can be rest assured
of his victory in this election."
"People are not aware of the truth yet. They are
ignorant of the slavery life which people on Earth were subjected to. Vikram
hid all these nasty details in his false campaign. Moon citizens may think that
people on Earth are not even slightly thankful to them in spite of providing them
food. Our first step is to bring about a change in this attitude of Moon citizens."
"How can we do that?" Prem asked.
"I am going to compete against Vikram in this
election." Asha said.
"How long do you think it will take Vikram to kill you?
Like he did to your parents?"
"I know. I am not going to directly meet people in my
campaign. Everything is going to happen from your bunker. I will make only one
appearance before the election commission to file my nominations. And from then
on, till the elections are over, I am going to stay in hiding in this
bunker." Asha said.
"What do you think we can do from here, Asha?"
"We have to telecast our campaign video in all TV
channels every one hour."
"But none of the channels will oblige to our request due
to the fear of incurring Vikram's wrath."
"Yes. We have to telecast our campaign videos in the
same frequency that telecasts major news channels. Got it?"
"Now it is clear to me. Emerging victorious in this
election looks tedious. But still, we are left with no other choice than
this."
Earth
Vallabh said "Our situation has become pathetic now,
Nero. The food in ration shops will only last for another one month. We have to
come up with a plan to secure food after that."
Nero said "Last week, I started a research laboratory to
find ways to grow plants without soil, water and air, remember?"
Vallabh sighed. "Do you think they will come up with a
solution in one month's time?"
Nero understood what he meant. "OK. Do you have a better
idea?"
Vallabh said "We have to enter into an agreement with
Mars that they will provide us food and all necessary help towards your research.
We will in turn give them minerals from Earth. This is not made available to
them for free. Instead they have to pay the rightful amount and offer
technological assistance. They should also aid in our re-construction of Earth.
As of now, Mars is importing minerals from Jupiter, costing them an arm and a
leg. So, they will definitely enter into an agreement with us. Moreover, human
beings on Earth are residing only in India. Europe, America and Africa continue
to be unsustainable because of radiation exposure. We have to clean those places
and turn them into places fit for living. Hence, we require help from Mars in
this regard too. I know that they have the scientific knowledge and relevant
technology to do this. We should not tunnel our vision to India alone. Instead,
we have to broaden our mind to include the betterment of the whole
planet."
Nero disagreed. "I won't accept your proposal. My aim is
to see Earth becoming self-sufficient. If we proceed with this plan, then Mars
will try to exploit us like what Moon did. I won't agree to your plan till my
last breath."
Vallabh explained. "Trade is essential for the growth
and development of any planet. Why should you fear unnecessarily that Mars will
also be power hungry like Moon? Moreover, there is a rumor that Moon is going
to start a war with us in one month's time. Do you have a plan to tackle
this?"
Nero said "I have sent a messenger to conduct peace
talks with Moon."
Vallabh got irritated. "Talks! Talks! Can peace talks put
an end to all our problems? We should be on the stronger side when conducting
peace talks with the enemy. Then only the talks will turn out to be favorable
to us. But we are weaker than Moon in terms of military, economy and basically
all other things. Then how do you expect the talks to be successful?"
Nero thought for a while. "So what do you suggest?"
Vallabh said "We can request Mars to provide us military
assistance. I am going to talk to the president of Mars in person."
Nero expressed his dissatisfaction. "What a foolish
idea? This will definitely end in Mars controlling us in the future. I have to
go to the senate. You can leave now."
Moon
Chandran was roaming the streets of Moon way past midnight,
going through his plan.
"I have to make slight modifications to my plan. The
arms revolution on Earth has to start from Moon. I want your life! Vikram Pande,
I will take your life! Your death will be the starting point of this
revolution."
Suddenly he was surrounded by four people. They were carrying
guns.
Chandran's instinctive reaction was to reach for his gun. But
he restrained himself from doing so.
They tied Chandran's hands and blindfolded him. They rode on
a vehicle. Later, his blindfold was removed.
In front of him, there was a man with tonsured head.
"Who are you? What's your name?" The stranger
asked.
"Chandran."
"What does it mean?"
"It means the Moon."
The man sitting in front of him laughed heartily.
"You are funny. Where are you coming from? What are you
doing in the middle of the night?"
"First, I want to know, who you are."
"Have you heard about Mao organization?"
"I know. The great organization that started arms
revolution to bring justice to the society's downtrodden people."
"You are right. We are fighting against social
disparity."
"Social inequality? In Moon?"
"Are you new to Moon? Asking questions like you are not
aware of anything happening here. Here, wealth is amassed by people belonging
to Vikram's party. All the industrial factories belong to his party leaders. Party
members enjoy a handsome salary, lead a luxurious life and their children get
top notch education. Whereas people who are not in his party suffer worse than
a bonded laborer."
"So who is your enemy?"
"Vikram Pande."
"He is my enemy too. I am coming from Earth. He kept us
enslaved under his rule. What is your plan to defeat him?" asked Chandran
excitedly.
"We are planning to start a revolt during the upcoming presidential
election."
"That will not serve our purpose. Vikram will implement
emergency rule, citing the prevailing violence. Then we will have to bid good
bye to democracy forever."
"Do you have some other better plan?"
Chandran took out his revolver and acted like shooting,
uttering the name "Vikram Pande!"
---(7)---
All the Moon inhabitants were huddled in front of the TV,
listening intently to Vikram's speech.
"Friends! Our Moon is in a pretty bad shape right now.
People of Earth have cheated us. They betrayed us even in spite of getting help
from us in all possible ways. They put an end to the flow of minerals that we
are entitled to justly. This created an acute shortage of essential goods on Moon.
If this pathetic situation continues, then we will be out of electricity by
next month. So, I am informing you that we are starting a war against Earth
from this instant. But this will not in any way hamper the presidential
election being held tomorrow. Thanks for your support."
As soon as Vikram's face disappeared from the TV, Asha's face
was seen.
"People! I am Asha. I am the daughter of our late
leader, Vishal. I am aware of the fact that our people are angry over Earth.
But is this anger justified? You can decide it for yourself, by looking at
these visuals."
She showed clippings depicting the piteous condition of Earth.
People standing in long lines before the ration shop for food, the harsh
conditions of the mines where people worked, children suffering from tuberculosis,
the poor look of the numerous slums were flashed on the screen.
Asha reappeared on screen. "People! You have now
witnessed the sad state of people residing in Earth. The people suffering in Earth
are not traitors. One among them may be your father, your brother, your great
grandmother. In fact, we have the same blood as them. Can we forsake them?
Decide your vote wisely. Whether you want to cast it to the treacherous man,
Vikram Pande who made Earth come to this poor state or you want to save our
home land Earth by voting for me? Thanks for your time."
As Asha's video ended, the people in front of TV sat shell
shocked.
------------********-------------
Vikram Pande was of the routine of meeting his citizens one
day weekly. He liked to interact with them on a personal level. This was
instrumental in getting him a good name among people too.
That day he met his citizens in the park near to his palace.
Chandran aimed his gun at Vikram from a high rise building opposite to the
park.
He hesitated before shooting Vikram as he was surrounded by
people. But he got a moment, when Vikram was in his view uninterrupted. As he
was about to pull the trigger, the governor bent down to take a child in his
hands. The child's head showed up on his gun's crosshairs.
Chandran let out a sigh of exasperation as he put down his
gun and left the building.
Earth
One night had passed since Moon waged war against Earth. The
drone jets from Moon caused huge damage to Earth. Several millions of people
lost their lives.
Nero and Vallabh sat shocked and clueless as what to do next.
"This is entirely due to my foolishness. I should have
listened to you, Vallabh." Nero blamed himself for the damages.
"What is the use of crying over spilt milk? We should
decide our next course of action." Vallabh pointed out.
"I am completely blank in this regard. What do you
think? Do you have any idea?"
"I am leaving to Mars tonight. We are in dire need of
their assistance."
"If you travel during this war time, your life will be
in danger."
"Don’t worry about me. We have to think of the greater
good."
As Vallabh was leaving Nero's place, a drone jet bombarded his
place and disappeared.
Vallabh screamed "Nero!" and ran inside his house.
Nero was lying on the floor with a heavy injury to his head.
Vallabh calmed down only after he ascertained that Nero was still alive.
Immediately, he rushed Nero to the nearest hospital. Vallabh
stayed beside Nero during the entire time.
The next day dawned with a pleasant surprise. The drone jets
from Moon were nowhere to be seen signaling that the war had come to an end.
Moon
Vikram Pande's office was a stone throw away from his
residence. So, he was of the habit of walking to his office every day.
The path from his house to his office was secured by numerous
soldiers. Chandran was one among them in a soldier's uniform carrying a gun. He
thought of shooting Vikram when he came near him. When Vikram was nearing him,
his assistant's child came and shook hands with Vikram.
Chandran was surprised by Vikram's endless love for kids.
Whether Vikram has a little bit of humanity left in him? If so, then why should
he behave such inhumanely towards people in Earth? Is it only for political
gain? Chandran sensed his resolve to kill Vikram melting away. No, this cannot
happen. I have to find some other suitable time to kill this man. Chandran
slowly moved away from the place without anyone noticing his absence.
--------------**********-------------
Vikram arranged an emergency meeting with his senior
ministers as soon as he came to his office.
"From where did this girl Asha come? I had believed 100%
that I will emerge victorious in the election tomorrow. Now, it seems like she
will defeat me." Vikram was blasting away in anger.
The defense minister sat silently.
"Where is she now?" Vikram shouted.
"Our military and commando soldiers are searching her
intensely. But her whereabouts still remain a mystery."
"Inform the
election commissioner to cancel tomorrow's election."
"In spite of giving repeated orders, he is not in favor
of cancelling the election. He fears that a bigger revolt will take place if
elections are not held tomorrow as per schedule."
"How is the war on Earth proceeding?"
"It is going on without a glitch. If we continue
bombarding for another week, Earth will be destroyed completely."
"Good. Order our soldiers to arrest the election
commissioner. Appoint a new one in his place and make him cancel the
election."
As the defense minister left his room, Vikram switched on the
TV to watch the current war scenario.
Later, he stood by the window in his room and gazed at the
high rise buildings opposite to his office. At that moment, a bullet hit his
head and the next moment he collapsed on the floor.
Chandran put down his gun in a suitcase and left the high rise
building.
----------------**********-------------
One week had passed since Vikram died. Asha was the president
now, after winning the election.
As her foremost job, she stopped the attack on Earth. She
went to Earth eager to meet her friends.
Vallabh welcomed her and both of them went to see Nero.
Vallabh said "As he suffered head injury, he has been
mentally traumatized. So, I had step in his shoes and became the next leader.
What a great leader he has been? How he attracted people through his oratory
skills? Now, I am the last man standing to shoulder this huge responsibility of
governing Earth. You are my only remaining friend to help me in this great
task."
Asha said "Don’t worry Vallabh. It is our duty to make
sure the sacrifices made by Mohan and Nero don’t go waste. We have to build a bond
of trust between Earth and Moon. Our next step would be to go to Mars. We have
to establish friendly relationship with the government of Mars. But, I wish to
meet my grandpa before going to Mars. He must be in Sri Lanka only,
right?"
Vallabh replied "Yes. Fortunately, Lanka did not come
under the attack of drone flights. He is perfectly safe there."
Asha said "Come let's go and meet him."
Vallabh added happily. "Now, we can travel to Lanka in a
motor boat with a seating capacity of twenty people. Moreover, it takes just
one hour to reach Lanka."
-------------*********-------------
The next day Asha and Vallabh were on a motor boat on their
way to Lanka.
Vallabh reminisced. "It was only three months ago that
we travelled to the very same Lanka with our friends."
Asha said "Yes. That time you were manning the helm of
the boat. I even remember the argument between you and Nero."
Vallabh sighed.
"Any news on Chandran?"
Asha said "No. There is a rumor floating that it was
Chandran who killed Vikram. But, I refuse to believe it."
Vallabh said "Had he been with us, he would have been
our pillar of strength."
Asha nodded in agreement.
They stopped talking, silently recollecting the memories of
last three months.
The man steering their motor boat was listening to their
conversation without them noticing.
He had tonsured his head and sported a beard.
"Vallabh, Asha! I will forever stay near you. I will be
there to protect you and as a pillar of support to achieve our ambitious dream.
Oh, the revolutionary spirit raging in me! Please take a back seat now and make
way for my dear two friends here."
The man was none other than Chandran, who was in disguise as
he silently continued steering the boat.
